Alottawata: Riding a tourism wave

WaterslideOttawa is a tourism magnet. Every year, millions of people come to see its famous offerings from the Parliament Buildings to the Changing of the Guard to the National Art Gallery.

But for entrepreneur Rick Hunter, Ottawa was missing something. There was no major recreation attraction.

So Hunter, founder of ProSlide Technology, the world’s leader in designing and building water slides for water parks from China to Australia to the United Arab Emirates, decided to design and build his own water park in Canada’s capital city. The $40 million, 100-acre Alottawata is slated to open in June 2011 and will be a showcase for his company’s innovative rides.

“It will be a boost to our tourism industry,” says Hunter. “We’ll be able to offer people something they haven’t had before in Ottawa and, at the same time, we’ll attract people who normally wouldn’t think of coming to the city. The result will be more tourists who stay longer and come back more often.”
